Safari Travel Guide

Going on safari is a fun and memorable experience. Of all my travel experiences, going on safari is my favorite.

Here's the top places for an African Safari:

Kenya: the beautiful Masai Mara and Amboseli National Park

Tanzania: world-famous Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater
Mt Kilimanjaro: Summit Africa's highest mountain

Botswana: the lush green Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park

Namibia: drive yourself around Etosha National Park

Here's general advice for booking a safari:

Africa is a special place -- the more you see, the more you want to stay! There's something strangely familiar and comforting about Africa's landscape and its animals. We especially miss camping in the bush and falling asleep to the distant (and sometimes not so distant!) sounds of hippos, hyenas, and lions.

Questions and Answers

What is the average price of a good safari?

anonymous
Prices vary quite a bit based on the level of accommodation. At the low end, quite a bit of the fee you pay is park fees. For that reason, safaris in busses with large groups tend not to be significantly cheaper than jeep safaris. We booked a "discount" safari when we arrived in Arusha (Tanzania). We paid about $100/day -- most of that was park fees. We got a driver/cook, a guide, slept in tents, and shared a jeep with another couple. Our jeep was in good condition, our guide was very well trained, and the food was excellent⦠As you'd expect, it costs more for fancier accommodations, better food, a private jeep, etc. Flying safaris can cost upwards of $500 per person per night. As you move up the price scale, larger safari companies will often get better discounts on airfare, hotels, etc so it is worthwhile to check around.
